Picking your gear appropriately can be a little overwhelming. It's taken me just about a year to put together my collection, but I am always looking for new stuff to add. Take a look at what I'm wearing for my day hikes and overnight trips and maybe it will help you out.
Footwear
Merrell® Women's Moab Ventilator
I've had these hiking shoes for a little over a year now, and I know I will never buy a different brand. When these ones finally wear out (which very well might be never), I might go with a mid-height, but for now these are suiting me very well. They are extremely durable and the arch and ankle support is awesome. These hold up really well on rough terrain and are well worth the investment.
Darn Tough Vermont® Solid Micro-Crew Cushion Hiking/Trekking Socks
I just bought these yesterday at my local REI, review to come!
Clothing
Women's Active by Old Navy® Mesh Tops
You absolutely cannot beat the price on these tops. They are lightweight, extremely cool, and $10 when they go on sale. I always wear one of these on my hiking trips. I am a believer in finding a good balance between high quality and cost effective gear. And in this case, these perform just as well as their much higher priced counterparts. In warm weather, it's perfect by itself. When it's a little bit cooler, just throw a long sleeve underneath it for a little bit of layering.
Columbia® Women's Benton Springs Rib Full Mix Fleece Jacket
It doesn't get much better than a lightweight fleece jacket. Unless you're headed to Death Valley in July, I always throw this baby in the car. It's light, small and easy to pack and you can never go wrong with a little extra warmth. On cold and windy days, I like to wear it underneath my ski jacket shell for a perfect warmth and wind breaker combo.
The North Face® Women's Paramount Valley Convertible Pants
This is the only brand of hiking/trekking pants I will ever own. They are cool, moisture-wicking, and provide plenty of room to throw on a pair of leggings or long johns underneath for cooler weather. I love the extra cargo pockets for my point and shoot camera or on the trail snacks. The convertible pants/shorts combination also saves weight in my pack and makes for a quick and easy change when the weather starts to shift. The best part: they are machine washable and don't change their shape and fit in the dryer.
Outdoor Research® Sun Runner Cap
Anticipating many trips to the desert in my near future, I just bought this high-quality outdoors hat. I will be trying it out for the very first time tomorrow. I was looking for something that would adequately block the searing desert sun while being light and airy enough to provide adequate ventilation around my head and neck. However, the most important feature of this hat is the hole in the back where I can stick my ponytail. This was a primary consideration for me in buying a hiking hat, since I don't like my hair to be sitting right on my neck.
Women's Active by Old Navy® Sports Bra
I'm not real picky when it comes to sports bras, so the value and performance combination of the Old Navy active sports bra is unbeatable.
